Lauren Smith: What is your book about? The Desert has no King Frederiko Aguilar: This is the story of an ambitious young man, living outside a suburb of Los Angeles, California. It is the story of what all-young gamblers dream of, and few will experience; perhaps survive it. We follow Frankie Santos through his journey of ultimate desire to reach the ecstasy of power, by becoming the next mogul of the largest casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. At the age of 10 years, he pitched pennies and played marbles for money with other neighborhood teenagers. He also started learning the games of poker and horse racing. At the age of 12, he shared his new devotion with his fellow class mates while still in grammar school, and introduced them to poker. As he neared adulthood, he continued to live a life as a financial loser by getting involved with playing the horses almost everyday, and getting involved in backroom poker games with adults. It became detrimental to his welfare and family, until his uncle, a former gambler and current race horse bookie, showed him a better way to make the real money… by becoming the horse bettor sucker's bank. In a very short time, he was becoming a financial success. Being at the wrong place at the wrong time led Santos into a rugged adventure. He interfered with the business of the Mexican Mafia. He is on the run and in hiding in Las Vegas, Nevada. He begins a new journey of big money, greed, drugs… as powerful organized crime enters his world. Lauren Smith: How much research went into writing it? Frederiko Aguilar: I lived in the gambling world for over 45 years, and know people who lived the journey of the underworld. |
